Salmon Fishing on the Sanddøla in Norway
Salmon and Trout Fishing in Norway’s Angler’s Paradise
Wild salmon, big trout, unspoilt wilderness and your own lodge right on the river – welcome to the Sanddøla in Grong!
For many fly anglers, fishing for wild salmon and trout in Norway’s unspoilt wilderness is a lifelong dream. Since 2025, a very special destination has been available to make that dream come true: the Sanddøla near Grong, in central Norway, around 200 kilometres north of Trondheim.
With our own lodge and now 5 kilometres of private fishing water, we have expanded our offering to include a beautiful Norwegian salmon river. After more than 40 years of experience in fly fishing and managing our own rivers in Bavaria, Erich Brinkhoff and his partner have fulfilled a personal dream.
The Sanddøla – a Special Salmon River in Central Norway
In the municipality of Grong, in the former county of Nord-Trøndelag, two important salmon rivers meet: the famous Namsen and its tributary, the Sanddøla.
While the Namsen is better known internationally, the Sanddøla is steadily gaining popularity among fly anglers. Its salmon-bearing stretches are ideal for two-handed fly fishing, offering a variety of opportunities for experienced salmon anglers and newcomers alike.
The average weight of salmon is around 5–6 kilograms, making this a particularly attractive fishery. In the past, some exceptional salmon weighing up to 23 kilograms have also been caught.
Our salmon fishing season runs from 1 June to 15 September, giving anglers a long and varied season to enjoy this remarkable river.
5 Kilometres of Private Salmon Fishing
Through a fortunate turn of events, we were able to acquire a charming former farm in an idyllic location, complete with approximately 117 hectares of woodland and particularly valuable fishing rights along both banks of the Sanddøla.
Our private stretch offers a variety of fascinating river sections. One of the highlights is the large Bridge Pool, located in the middle section of our water. Its depth provides an ideal resting place for migrating salmon as they make their way upstream.
The extensive gravel banks on both sides of the river make getting started with salmon fishing relatively straightforward and provide plenty of room for fly casting.
Over time, we have been able to expand our offering to include a total of 5 kilometres of the Sanddøla. A particularly interesting section lies further downstream, towards the river’s confluence. Salmon often gather here early in the season, making it an exciting spot to explore and fish.
More Than Salmon – Trout and Arctic Char, Too
If you travel to Norway as early as 1 May, you won't have to leave your fly rod behind. The region already offers excellent opportunities for fishing for Arctic char and brown trout.
The lodge is situated in the heart of a spectacular natural landscape, surrounded by an enormous area for outdoor recreation, with approximately 900 lakes and thousands of kilometres of streams and rivers.
This opens up countless opportunities for varied fishing adventures beyond the Sanddøla itself. Anyone who has experienced the fight of a wild Norwegian Arctic char or a powerful brown trout on a fly rod in this magnificent landscape is unlikely to forget it in a hurry.
117 Hectares of Wilderness – Your Own Little World in Norway
Our former farmhouse is idyllically situated in the heart of nature. The property includes approximately 117 hectares of woodland, offering peace, privacy and a wonderful sense of seclusion.
With a little luck, you may spot moose, reindeer and other wildlife. The forests are rich in mushrooms and wild berries, too. And if you fancy a day away from fishing, there are countless opportunities to explore the fascinating surrounding countryside.
This is about more than fishing.
It is about experiencing Norway in all its beauty.
Getting to Grong – Easier Than You Might Think
Getting here is easier than many people imagine. For example, direct flights from Munich to Trondheim are available on certain days. From there, it takes approximately 2.5 hours to travel north to Grong, either by rental car or train.
Our destination is therefore relatively quick and straightforward to reach.
And then the real holiday begins:
Mountains, forests, lakes, streams and rivers – pure wilderness.
Around the lodge, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery while discovering some of the most exciting fishing opportunities in central Norway.
Your Fishing Holiday on the Sanddøla
Whether you want to target salmon with a two-handed rod, pursue brown trout and Arctic char with a fly rod, or simply spend a few days surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, the Sanddøla offers the perfect combination of fly fishing, adventure, peace and relaxation.
Our own lodge and 5 kilometres of private fishing on the Sanddøla are at the heart of your stay.
Experience Norway where wild salmon move through crystal-clear rivers, mountains stretch towards the horizon and nature still sets the pace of life.
A dream destination for fly anglers.

Our Home Stretch on the Sanddøla
Exclusive Fishing for Lodge Guests
Our very own home stretch on the Sanddøla begins right outside our lodge. This exclusive section is reserved entirely for our lodge guests, with a maximum of seven rods fishing at any one time.
The lodge is situated right beside the river. Simply cross the road and you will find yourself at promising fishing spots where you can cast your two-handed rod and wait for your first salmon.
The fishing is varied and exciting. Deep pools, interesting current seams, gravel banks and quieter stretches offer a range of opportunities to tempt migrating salmon with a fly.
Everything You Need – Even Without Your Own Equipment
If you don't have your own salmon fishing equipment, you can easily rent everything you need from us.
A two-handed rod, reel and suitable fly lines are available for a flat rate of €125 per week.
If you also need a complete set of wading gear, you can rent waders, a wading jacket, a wading staff and a landing net for an additional €125 per week.
This means you can enjoy your salmon fishing holiday without having to bring a complete two-handed outfit all the way to Norway.
Our Lodge – Designed with Fly Anglers in Mind
Our lodge has been specially equipped to meet the needs of fly anglers.
It features:
4 bedrooms with a total of 6 beds
A comfortable living room
A dining room
A fully equipped kitchen
A bathroom
A heated drying room with underfloor heating
Space to dry and store waders and fishing equipment
And best of all: the river is right on your doorstep.
Salmon Fishing Courses with Professional Instruction
If you would like to learn salmon fishing with a two-handed rod or improve your technique, you can also book a full week of salmon fishing tuition with professional instruction during the prime fishing season.
It's about much more than learning to cast. Participants also learn how to read a salmon river, identify promising lies, present the fly effectively and adapt their fishing to changing water levels and conditions.
For beginners in particular, this is an excellent opportunity to discover the fascinating world of salmon fishing.
The Impressive Waterfalls of the Sanddøla
In the lower reaches of the Sanddøla, two impressive waterfalls, Formofossen and Tømmeråsfossen, create natural obstacles for migrating salmon. Only the strongest fish manage to overcome these barriers.
Above Tømmeråsfossen lies Dikkamoen, a particularly interesting waterfall pool. After their initial ascent over Tømmeråsfossen, salmon can remain here for some time to rest before continuing upstream.
Our guests are permitted to fish the pool from one bank, making this a particularly exciting location for targeting large salmon.
Dikkamoen – Where the First Big Salmon Arrive
At Dikkamoen, there is a fish ladder equipped with a camera, allowing migrating salmon to be observed. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the annual salmon run.
Depending on water levels, the first significant run of large salmon often reaches the Dikkamoen area around 20 June.
This makes it particularly worthwhile, early in the season, to consider booking an additional day permit for the river mouth below Tømmeråsfossen. Salmon may gather there early in the season before continuing their journey upstream.
This gives you the flexibility to adapt your fishing holiday to current water levels and the progress of the salmon run.
The Namsen and Bjøra Are Also Close By
Our lodge is an ideal base for exploring other famous salmon rivers in the region.
Just a few minutes away by car, you will find the Namsen, one of Norway's best-known salmon rivers, famous for its impressive salmon runs.
The Bjøra is also within easy reach, with its fly-fishing season beginning as early as 15 May.
Depending on the season, water levels and your personal preferences, our guests can therefore choose from several different fishing opportunities for a varied and memorable holiday.
Important to Know: Nature Sets the Pace
Salmon fishing always depends on natural conditions. Water levels and weather have a decisive influence on when the fishing season begins and how it develops.
Particularly following unusually high spring water levels, the fish ladder and certain fishing areas may not be accessible or open for fishing at the beginning of June.
We therefore recommend checking the latest conditions before travelling and remaining flexible with your fishing plans.
Trout Fishing on the Sanddøla
The trout fishing season on the Sanddøla runs from 1 June to 15 September.
In addition, our guests can enjoy further fishing opportunities in the surrounding area. The region around Grong offers a vast network of lakes, streams and rivers, with plenty of interesting options for brown trout and Arctic char.
Guiding in Grong
If you would like professional assistance during your stay, we can also arrange guided fishing trips.
Grong is home to an established guiding school with experienced local guides. Guides can be booked from €300 per day.
Payment is made directly to the guide on site.
Especially when fishing for salmon, an experienced guide can be invaluable on your first day. Local guides know the river and its conditions, can show you promising fishing spots and offer valuable advice on casting, fly selection and fishing at different water levels.

Important Information
* In June, the salmon run may be delayed depending on water levels and weather conditions. We therefore recommend purchasing an additional fishing permit for the Sanddøla river mouth, particularly at the beginning of the season. Salmon may gather there early in the season before moving further upstream.
** From 16 September 2026 onwards, salmon and trout fishing is no longer permitted on the Sanddøla. However, our guests can enjoy numerous beautiful trout rivers and other interesting fishing waters throughout the surrounding region.
*** A supplement of €250 per week applies to single occupancy of a double room.
**** Salmon Fishing Seminar: The course is led by Thomas Urbig from Munich, a renowned two-handed casting instructor. The course fee includes accommodation in a double room, all fishing permits for our private stretches, and 4–6 hours of daily casting tuition and guided fishing. Afterwards, participants can continue fishing independently, with occasional support from the instructor.
***** Full Salmon Fishing Package: Personal instruction and guidance from an experienced fly angler and fisherman from Bavaria. The package includes accommodation in a double room, all fishing permits for our private stretches, half board, and several hours of daily personal guidance and guided fishing.
Flights and transfers are not included in the seminar price. Shared group transfers can be arranged.
Non-fishing companions can be accommodated in a double room upon request.
